Some people most probably theorized, erroneously, that if someone sat down in the middle of a large carpet, that such a huge wind storm (hurricane or tornado) would propel them through the sky. If such very strong winds are present, as in a hurricane or a tornado, carpets would get lifted up and then sail high into the air, long before the vendors would have the time to move them to safety. Sometimes, there are very strong wind storms that can develop, under certain weather very quickly with little warning. At times any carpets laid out on the ground or on racks would have been highly exposed to the weather. Such dealers would have indoor showrooms, but on nice, warm weather days there are carpet vendors who sell their fabric merchandise outdoors at stalls or on lots. Oriental and Middle Eastern carpets are the most preferred carpets in the world and have been so for many, many centuries. In Asia and the Middle East there are carpet dealers who buy and sell carpets. The idea where miraculously flying carpets came might just be a complete mystery.
We know that there are no magical flying carpets, and there mention in many centuries old stories provided a source of entertainment for readers of fantasy, whether or not such readers knew they were reading fantasy. There are stories of other people, in different nations, of various time periods, owning flying carpets and awesome travelling thereupon them. The July 1969 release “Early Steppenwolf” featured live recordings made at The Matrix in San Francisco in May 1967 and featured a 20-minute version of “The Pusher”.In ancient lore, the famous Jewish King Solomon allegedly owned a huge flying carpet that allowed him to travel to Damascus, Syria for breakfast and then to Media, Saudi Arabia. In March ‘69 “At Your Birthday Party” was released to further success and was their first record to feature Nick St Nicholas on bass and their last to feature Michael Monarch. The Second was released in October ‘68 and featured the hit single “Magic Carpet Ride” (another US #2 hit). The band were propelled to success with their classic single “Born To Be Wild” (a #2 hit in the US) and became even wider known when the track was featured, along with their version of “The Pusher” in the classic 1969 counterculture film Easy Rider.
The band signed to Dunhill/ABC the same year and with producer Gabriel Mekler they recorded their self-titled debut album. They were joined by Michael Monarch (lead guitar) and Rushton Moreve (bass). Steppenwolf was formed in 1967 in LA by John Kay (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Goldy McJohn (organ, piano) and Jerry Edmonton (drums) who were previously members of the Canadian band The Sparrows. The new 8CD box set, Steppenwolf - Magic Carpet Ride: The Dunhill / ABC Years 1967-1971, will be released on November 19 via Cherry Red.
